Electromagnetic diaphragm pumps are often referred to as linear air pumps. Most people would recognize them as aquarium air pumps; they look like a toaster. They use an electromagnetic system that oscillates the diaphragm and creates a steady flow of air. They are simple but very durable, and this is the quietest way to create air pressure. But silence brings limitations, and they provide no more than 6-7 psi or 0.41-0.48 bar pressure for larger models, and most operate at a maximum of 3-4 psi or 0.21-0.28 bar.

With the right type of air diffuser, they are ideal for shallow water gardens. However, they can sometimes be wrong about the true depth of their water basins. Picking the wrong compressor can lead to its diaphragms wearing out faster and causing it to break constantly. Electromagnetic diaphragm compressors use air filters made out of fibres that require cleaning every 6 to 12 months, or more frequently if your compressor is in a dusty environment. The filter can be cleaned with soap and water and reused several times.
